Skip Tracing — Locating People for Service and Investigation

When the address you have is old, wrong, or deliberately hidden, skip tracing finds the current one. Roman Guardian LLC locates defendants, witnesses, debtors, and other hard-to-find people so your case can move.

What is skip tracing?

Skip tracing is the work of locating a person whose current whereabouts are unknown — combining lawful database searches, public records, and field verification to establish a current address. Attorneys use it most often to find a defendant for service of process; it is also used to locate witnesses, debtors, and heirs.

How much does a skip trace cost?

A standard skip trace is $125. You receive a written report of what was found — the best current address and the basis for it — and if the person genuinely cannot be located, the report documents the searches made, which supports a motion for alternative service.

What information do you need to start a trace?

A full name is the starting point. Anything else you have helps: a date of birth, a last known address, a phone number, an employer, or the names of relatives. The more identifiers you provide, the faster and more reliable the result — but a name and one solid detail is enough to begin.

How long does a skip trace take?

Most standard traces are completed within a few business days. Difficult cases — common names, people who have moved repeatedly, or people actively avoiding being found — can take longer, and we will tell you honestly where a search stands rather than guess.

What do I do once you find the person?

Most clients pair the trace with service of process: routine service is $165 including three attempts, and we serve the address the trace establishes. Trace and service together are how a stalled case gets moving again. Routine service is completed in 48–72 hours. Three attempts are included, with timestamped status updates on every attempt, and every assignment is quoted in writing before work begins.

Is skip tracing legal?

Yes, when done properly. Roman Guardian uses lawful databases and public records and follows the rules that govern access to personal information. We do not use false pretenses to obtain protected records, and we will tell you plainly if a request crosses a line we will not cross.
